Choosing Skincare That Works for Nigerian Skin and Heat

Did you know that most skincare products that were formulated in cold climates can feel suffocating and heavy on our skin here? That’s because the high temperatures in the country make the skin sweat more, produce excess oil, and clog the pores. Here’s how to choose skincare that works for Nigerian skin and heat. But first…

Why You Should Choose Skincare That Works for Nigerian Skin and Heat

Choosing skincare that works well under the unrelenting sun and humidity means balancing lightweight hydration with effective protection. This is because the sweat mixes with sebum, traps dirt and leads to clogged pores and breakouts. Here are some key ingredients that work to prevent this:

  1. Salicylic Acid or Tea‑Tree Cleanser

Start with a gentle foaming or gel cleanser that includes salicylic acid or tea-tree oil. These ingredients help lift away sweat, oil, and pollution, without stripping the skin.

  1. Hydrating, Lightweight Moisturiser

Naturally, you would think skipping moisturiser is the right thing to do due to the high humidity, but it’s not so. Skipping moisturiser actually backfires since the skin overproduces oil when it gets dehydrated.

Instead, use a water-based, gel moisturiser with humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. These lock in moisture without feeling heavy or greasy, and are ideal for keeping skin balanced even in high heat.

  1. Oil‑Regulating Actives

Incorporate niacinamide, vitamin C, and Azelaic acid. While niacinamide is excellent for reducing excess oil, refining pores, calming inflammation, and preventing breakouts, vitamin C protects the skin from environmental damage.

Azelaic Acid is excellent for treating acne and targeting hyperpigmentation while also helping to relieve the sensation of heat.

  1. Gentle Exfoliants

Use a mild chemical exfoliant, like a BHA or gentle AHA, and not more than twice a week, to clear trapped sweat, dirt, pollutants, and dead skin. This helps avoid clogged pores without irritating sensitive, heat-stressed skin.

  1. Broad‑Spectrum, Lightweight Sunscreen

Every morning, apply a lightweight sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Always remember to reapply when you sweat heavily or stay out in the sun. This protects against UV damage and “heat ageing.”

How to Build Your Daily Routine in Nigerian Heat

Morning: Cleanse, apply creams or products with oil-regulating actives, moisturise, and apply a lightweight sunscreen.

Evening: Cleanse twice if you’ve been sweating or wearing sunscreen. Apply an oil-regulating treatment, then moisturise.

Weekly: Use your chemical exfoliant 1–2 times. As an option, you can use a clay mask (like bentonite) once to absorb excess oil.
